Often women who contact the group ask about the problem of the vaginal opening becoming narrow. In the UK, some dermatologists say that maintaining regular sexual intercourse will help to prevent the vaginal opening from becoming narrow. Sometimes symptoms can prevent intercourse. Vaginal dilators are an ideal way to maintain the vaginal opening in good working order so that when symptoms are under control, intercourse may become possible once again. Some women find they can use dilators when they have active symptoms but they cannot face intimacy with their partners.

Everyone's circumstances will be different. If you do not have a sexual partner, maintaining the vaginal opening may not be an immediate priority for you. Sometimes women do not realise their vaginal opening has narrowed until they go for a smear test and then they find that the nurse or doctor has difficulty in inserting the speculum. Narrowing may occur during the times when you are not having intercourse. Many women contact NLSSG when they meet new partners after several years of being sexually inactive. Concerns are expressed about whether or not they will be able to have intercourse successfully. Vaginal dilators can help by restoring personal confidence. Working alone and in private with dilators, getting to know your body and be back in touch with it again is often helpful. Being able to insert dilators successfully can take away some of the stress of that 'first time' experience with a new partner. Well worth considering!

Whether you have a partner or not, regular use of vaginal dilators can help to keep the vaginal opening from narrowing. The regular use of dilators may prevent the need for surgery.

While NLSSG is prepared to share news about what has helped others, you must always seek medical advice regarding your own case before using dilators.

Remember - always use a good lubricant gel on the dilator before attempting to insert it. Try to relax and remember to breathe.
