VULVA SELF EXAMINATION

Why perform vulval self examination?

There are many conditions that affect the vulva, lichen sclerosus(LS) is only one of them.  Lichen sclerosus has a very slight risk of vulval cancer associated with it and whilst it may not “cause” vulval cancer, as the cause of vulval cancer is not known, there may be a tendency for those with LS to be at risk.  It has to be emphasised that the risk remains slight.  Even so, cases have occurred and it is better to be vigilant about making sure that any worrying signs of abnormality are recognised quickly and reported to your doctor.  The prospect of having to deal with vulval cancer is very frightening but the aim of this information is to help you and to enlighten, not frighten.  The sooner you obtain treatment for any vulval discomfort at an early stage the better.

The self-examination leaflet is now available in a PDF format and easy to download. You will need Adobe Acrobat for this download.
